Is the Weymouth scavenger hunt free?

Yes, it's a free one-page PDF. No sign-up and no email address. The only thing you might spend money on is the ice cream, which is worth 5 points.

Can we do it in one afternoon?

Comfortably. The seafront finds are all within a mile of the station. Nothe Fort is the one that adds a climb, so leave it until last or skip it.

Does it work out of season?

Mostly. The donkeys, the Punch and Judy show and the sand sculptures are summer-only, so you'd be playing for around 150 points instead of 195.

The Great Weymouth Scavenger Hunt for Kids

Weymouth is one of the few seaside towns where the station puts you a five-minute walk from the sand. That makes it close to ideal for a train day out with children: no car park, no long transfer, just off the train and down to the beach.

Twenty things to spot, scored out of 195. Four at the station, including the buffers where the tracks come to an end, and sixteen around the town and seafront. The Jubilee Clock, a Punch and Judy show, colourful beach huts, a donkey on the sand, fishing boats in the harbour, Nothe Fort up on the hill.

The seaside finds are deliberately the ordinary ones. A seagull, an ice cream with a flake, a red postbox. They're worth 5 points each and they exist to keep a younger child scoring while an older sibling goes after the fort and the lighthouse.

At the station

Four finds at Weymouth station. It's a terminus, so the buffers at the end of the platform are right there, and both the blue and white South Western Railway trains and the dark green GWR ones turn up.

Town and seafront

Sixteen finds along the beach, round the harbour and up the hill. The bay is a long curve, so you can work along it in one direction and end at the harbour without doubling back.

Tips for the grown-ups

Work the bay in one direction

Start at the station end, head along the sand past the Jubilee Clock and the beach huts, and finish at the harbour and Nothe Fort. Doing it as a loop means less backtracking with tired legs.

The donkeys and Punch and Judy are seasonal

Both are summer fixtures on Weymouth beach and won't be there in October half term. Don't promise them in advance, and the sheet still works without them.

Book the train early for the cheap fare

Weymouth is on the South Western Railway line from London Waterloo and the GWR line from Bristol. Advance singles booked a few weeks out are a fraction of the on-the-day price, and under-5s travel free.
