From there the network reaches Aberdeen, Inverness, Mallaig and Thurso — including the Far North Line, the Highland Main Line and the famous West Highland Line over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

ScotRail's modern Class 385 EMUs handle the Central Belt, while the Caledonian Sleeper offers an overnight journey from London. For heritage railway fans, the Strathspey Railway and the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway both run regular steam services.
